14-19 Plan

Additional Learning Needs

We remain committed to helping young people aged 14 – 19 with additional learning needs to access further education, training or employment. Last year we saw significant improvement in special schools as they improved their transition practices and revised their curriculum to better suit the needs of their pupils. We also helped FE establishments to build their capacity to deal with young people who presented behaviour problems.

This year, we will continue to work with special schools and are currently looking at the role and remit of the cross phase and sector Additional Learning Needs Collaborative Group to ensure that it addresses the needs of the young people in special schools. We are also now moving into mainstream schools to share best practice from special schools and support developments which will help to reduce the number of young people on the register of Special Educational Needs, who currently are not able to make a successful transition to the next stage. Our visits to date have been most positive. We look forward to more!
